Laser Magic for Crafting Gifts

B… Be in Creative Reflection

There is something magical about stepping off into an unfamiliar craft. The rush you can get of new ideas, sounds, boundaries and smells is intoxicating, a reminder of the incredible diversity of experiences our world has to offer that never leaves us bored. Welcome, fellow crafters, to another journey. Today, we’re diving into the heart of our Neje Laser. This is another thing we have decided to explore and be stunned by its creations… or sometimes not so much.

L… Learning Curves and Explore

As we step onto the idea of “Let’s get a laser”, we automatically get hit with what it can’t do. Even though we spend hours reading on what’s the best one to get. You-tubing side by side models for hours and days and still left with “did we make the right choice”. Then, survival’s evolution gives us that jolt to get over it and plunge into the unknown anyways. I try my best not to say “limits” or “mistakes” and just change the outlook as “learning curves” and with a laser it has a burning aroma to remind you. The drug out activities of what can we do, waiting for installs of apps and hardware for designs are always the most unexciting thing because we just want to laser. Jefferson was left with most of the latter while I found objects of goods to become our test objects and talking to friends to become our first contestants at This Project’s Right. My dear friend had a big conference coming up and she needed to come up with 200 gift bags of goodies. Well, I was so excited to work with this wonderful woman and her endless work she puts into this organization for OSAC (Oregon Self Advocacy Coalition). She deserves a blog story herself.

O… Old and New Techniques

One of the highlights of our experience is the hardware and assembly and designing that comes in. I have to admit this part of writing is handed to my handy dandy partner, Jefferson. If you have any questions to help you in your own project or out of curiosity, please always feel free to comment and ask. The worst thing is hearing myself talk without a conversation and that is what I want these to become… a community conversation.

Any-who, my friend was so focused (thus why she is asked to do these things) she had a list quickly put together of items she was looking for and we decided 200 wooden cup coasters with their logo on it was going to be our first project. Our physical location just happened to have had some windy storms the last year and we had a lot of 4 inches branches I collected and got busy slicing into 200 and plus practice pieces. I am a little skittish of “round” things rolling under a saw so Jefferson screwed a straight edge on all of the pieces I sliced. We kept the bark and live edge effect.

G… Goals or Go with the Heart

Our journey wouldn’t be complete without immersing ourselves in the learning curves. Now honestly if I had lots of orders pouring in I would just buy the wood rounds already cut and ready to laser. This is what I would recommend for others with a lot to do. For this project it was nice to do something the long route, at least once.

We ended up moving our laser to our shop because of the smell. We tried the house craft room first LOL. So I would also recommend really knowing ventilation while setting up. Where ours is now has a two window cross draft.

I… Inside Destination

But the true heart of any project lies in its people. Throughout this journey, we’ve had the privilege of working with OSAC, passionate people helping other people, and reminding us that it is their warmth and hospitality using our art to form genuine connections along the way.. My friend shared their stories and welcomed us into their community. Thank you, my dear friend.

This initial craft was and is the desired stamp for our vision:

  • As always I want us to be community as we share and BLOG IT:
    • Belong
    • Learn
    • Open up
    • Go together
    • Initiate
    • Talk and ask

T… The Last Thoughts

As our craft comes to an end and opens up to the infinite possibilities ahead, we’re left with more than just memories. We’ve gained a deeper understanding of the laser, a greater appreciation for its diversity, and a renewed sense of fasination. And so I close with my heart filled with a longing for my next adventure.
